More than a castle stop on the way elsewhere.

King Carol I did not choose Sinaia by accident. The forests, clean mountain air and position on the road between Wallachia and Transylvania offered both privacy and symbolic importance to a young kingdom looking confidently toward Europe. Peleș became a summer residence, a setting for state occasions and a carefully composed expression of Romania’s modern identity.

The full story is larger than one palace. Pelișor reveals the more intimate world of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie; Sinaia Monastery connects the resort to the older spiritual settlement that gave it its name; and the Royal Station recalls the age when monarchs, diplomats and European guests arrived here by train.

Your day is paced around the places that matter to you. There is time to notice the carved wood, stained glass, terraces and mountain setting, to pause for lunch or tea, and to explore without being pushed onward by a coach timetable. The order is adapted to current admission schedules and your preferred walking pace.

01

Peleș properly paced

Approach through the forested royal estate and explore the architecture, ceremonial rooms and collections available on your date, with their history placed in context.

02

The personal royal story

Enter Pelișor’s quieter world of Queen Marie, Art Nouveau design and royal domestic life—a revealing contrast to the formal scale of Peleș.

03

Sinaia beyond the palace

Connect the royal domain with the monastery, historic centre and Royal Station, understanding how the mountain town grew around faith, monarchy and travel.

Sinaia, read as more than a beautiful backdrop.

Four places reveal how a mountain settlement became the symbolic home of Romania’s modern monarchy.

01 · Peleș Castle

A royal residence designed to represent a new Romania.

Peleș was never a medieval fortress. Commissioned by King Carol I, it combined advanced technology with exceptional craftsmanship and interiors inspired by several European traditions. Its armour, woodcarving, textiles, glass and ceremonial rooms tell a political story as clearly as an architectural one: Romania wished to be seen as modern, cultured and fully European.

02 · Pelișor Castle

The human scale of the Romanian royal family.

Smaller and more personal, Pelișor shifts the mood from ceremony to character. Closely associated with King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, it is especially rewarding for travellers interested in Art Nouveau, Queen Marie’s distinctive taste and the private world that existed beside the official life of the monarchy.

03 · Sinaia Monastery

The place that existed before the royal resort.

Founded long before Peleș, the monastery gave Sinaia its name and anchors the town in an older religious history. Visiting it helps explain why the royal story did not begin on an empty mountain: the monarchy entered a landscape already shaped by pilgrimage, faith and the route through the Prahova Valley.

04 · Royal Station

The threshold between court life and the wider world.

Sinaia’s railway heritage recalls the guests who arrived from Bucharest and across Europe when rail travel transformed the valley. When access and timing allow, the Royal Station completes the narrative—from spiritual settlement to royal residence, and from secluded retreat to internationally connected mountain resort.

Questions, answered.

01Are Peleș and Pelișor open every day?+

No. Scheduled closure days, seasonal programmes and available interior tours can change. The current official schedule is checked for your exact date before the itinerary is confirmed.

02Can we visit only the grounds?+

Yes. An exterior and estate-focused programme can be arranged, particularly when interior access is unavailable or a shorter walking plan is preferred.

03Is this suitable for an older guest?+

Often, yes. There are sloping approaches and periods on foot, so tell us about mobility or rest requirements and the route will be planned honestly around them.

04Can Sinaia be combined with Bran and Brașov?+

Yes. Choose the signature Peleș, Bran and Brașov full-day tour when all three are priorities. The Royal Sinaia tour is the slower, more detailed alternative.

05How much walking is involved?+

The royal estate includes sloping paths, uneven surfaces and periods on foot. We explain the realistic walking requirements in advance, allow rest stops and adapt the day for senior travellers or guests with reduced mobility whenever possible.

06Are castle tickets included?+

Admissions are included only when they are expressly listed in your written confirmation. We explain the available visit options and can coordinate the appropriate tickets for your chosen programme.
